Modern extension for a traditional sandstone house

WTA is working on a an extension for a traditional sandstone semi-detached house in the Victoria Park Conservation Area of Edinburgh. The back of the house is currently very dark and cold, so a key ambition for the clients was to create a new open plan kitchen and living extension that would become the heart of the house, flooded with natural daylight whilst maximising usable space. The new additions are to be constructed with sustainable, non-toxic, recyclable materials with low-embodied carbon, contributing to a net-positive impact on the overall energy efficiency and health of the home and its occupants. Although distinctly contemporary, the materials chosen are calm and neutral, so to not detract from the historic features of the existing home and surrounding buildings.
