TOCHER KNOWE
A sustainable new build home in the Scottish Borders
Nestled against mature woodland and grassland, Tocher Knowe is a new, highly crafted family home in the Scottish Borders. Our client’s ambition was to create an exceptional space that responds with innovation to the topography, microclimate and ecology of the surrounding landscape. Positioned on the site to allow the valuable woodland and grassland habitats to thrive, the house reaches out towards its garden setting, creating pockets of shelter between three principle wings. Designed for flexibility and responsiveness, the house can be opened up or closed down according to its level of occupation; ensuring that its energy consumption is proportionate to its needs. Combined with local sandstone, Scottish timber and wildflower living roof, we have created a building design that is low-carbon, respectful of its surroundings and supportive of the vibrant biodiversity that makes the site so special.
