EARLSTON READING ROOM
Conversion of historic reading room & library to four bedroom home
The concept of Earlston’s Reading Room and Lending Library was proposed to the residents of Earlston in 1852. George Baillie, 10th Earl of Haddington, agreed to fund the building of a dedicated reading room and library on land he owned in the Market Place in Earlston, opening 1856. This current project is for the conversion of the Reading Room and Library into a four bedroom house. The designs focus on preserving the external appearance of the building, repairing and upgrading the historic fabric and creating comfortable, contemporary spaces within the historic shell. The project is an example of how considered alterations to historic buildings can provide a new lease of life for modern, highly sustainable and beautiful homes.
